FOX AND LOIS
WE HAVE BEEN COLLABORATING ON CERAMIC PIECES SINCE 1972. WE MET IN THE CERAMICS DEPT OF SJCA WHERE WE DISCOVERED OUR MUTUAL LOVE OF CLAY. OUR WORK HAS EVOLVED FROM PRODUCTION POTTERY TO INDIVIDUALLY HAND CARVED AND HAND SCULPTED PIECES.
OUR PROCESS
FOX THROWS EITHER PORCELAIN OR STONEWARE CLAY ON THE POTTER'S WHEEL, ALTERING THE SHAPES, ADDING HANDLES OR SCULPTING UNUSUAL FEET. LOIS THEN TAKES THE PARTIALLY DRIED PIECE (OR LEATHER HARD AS IT IS CALLED) AND CARVES ORIGINAL DESIGNS USING A VARIETY OF CARVING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED OVER MANY YEARS OF CARVING.

Fox glazes the landscape pieces. Each has a unique landscape that is captured by layering 4 to 6 different glazes. These pieces usually go through 2 high fire glaze firings to get the glazes to meld with each other.

High fire kilns getting ready to be loaded. Most glaze firings take 12 hours to reach temperature of 2330 degrees needed to mature the glazes.

Fox's sculpting can go in many directions. From high relief as these water dragons show to throwing multiple pieces and assembling them as in fish sculpture below in Photo Gallery (sold).

All ginkgo designed vases are individually hand thrown and hand carved. Most are glazed in a combination of two or three glazes.

Some of our birds have been called "Birds with Attitude"! At any rate, Big Billed or Big Attitude they all have different personalities. Each one is thrown on the potter's wheel and then sculpted by Fox. We glaze them in turquoise, black, green, blue or purple.

Totems are all one of a kind. Many are themed and each piece is hand carved or hand sculpted. They are mounted on steel bases with a galvanized pipe armature.
